Stephen King has an estimated net worth of $400 million dollars.

Stephen King is a best-selling American novelist with an estimated net worth of $400 million dollars. Stephen King was born on September 21, 1947 in Portland, Maine. He is six feet and four inches tall and weighs 190 pounds.  His parents Donald King and Nellie Ruth divorced when Stephen was at the tender age of two. His father reportedly left to go pick up a pack of cigarettes and he never came back. Stephen’s mother struggled to raise him and his adoptive brother. They moved to Wisconsin, Indiana, Connecticut, and back to Maine so that his mother could care for her sickly parents.

In a 2009 interview with Barnes & Noble Stephen revealed his early inspiration for the horror genre. He was fiddling around with things in the attic as a child and came across a paperback collection of H.P. Lovecraft short stories entitled The Lurker in the Shadows that had belonged to his father. Once he read the shorts, he immediately fell in love with horror. He is quoted as saying, “I knew that I’d found home when I read that book.”

As a child King was fascinated with Tales from the Crypt comics. He began writing stories of his own and contributing stories to Dave’s Rag, a newspaper that his brother published. In 1966 King enrolled into the University of Maine at Orono where he studied English. While in college King wrote for the student newspaper and published his real first short story which was featured in Startling Mystery Stories. King graduated with a B.A. in English in 1970. He wanted to land a teaching job but  was unsuccessful. King worked in industrial laundry after college and supplemented his income by selling short stories to men’s magazines. In 1971 he wed Tabitha Spruce.

King started writing Carrie, a story about a teenage girl with strange telekinesis powers. He became discouraged with the progress of his writing career and threw out the manuscript. His wife, Tabitha found the discarded work and urged Stephen to finish it. Publishing house Doubleday paid King $2500 for the novel. A few years later the paperback rights to Carrie sold for $400,000. After the success of Carrie, Stephen devoted all his time to writing. The rest is history. Some of the popular novels that Stephen wrote include Salem’s Lot, The Shining (This became adapted to film starring Jack Nicholson), Cujo, It, and The Stand.

Stephen King has become one of the most if not the most successful horror/sci-fi author of all time. His novels have sold over 350 million copies, and some have been adapted into box-office smashing Hollywood films.
