This made Morris the ideal actor to cast. In 1999, Chestnut starred in The Best Man alongside Taye Diggs, Nia Long, Terrence Howard, and Sanna Lathan. He played the role of a Lance Sullivan, a football player preparing for his wedding. The Best Man performed well in theaters and received positive reviews. For his performance as Lance Sullivan, Chestnut received a NAACP Image Award nomination.

After his breakout role, Chestnut landed roles in films like The Brothers (2001), Two Can PlayThat GAme (2001), Half Past Dead (2002), The Game Plan (2007), The Perfect Holiday (2007), Think Like A Man (2012), Identity Thief (2013), The Call (2013), and many more films. He has reprised the rile of Lance Sullivan for The Best Man Sequel, The Best Man Holiday is slated to be released November 15, 2013. Chestnut has two children, Grant and Paige, with his wife of eighteen years, Pam Byse.
