Most Expensive Wines in the World

A recent press release from a wine shop in the Dubai International Airport claims to be selling ”the world’s most expensive bottle of red wine to ever be retailed.” In Terminal 3, in the Le Clos wine there are currently three Balthazars of Château Margaux 2009 priced at $195,000 each. This is the first time Bordeaux wine producers have bottled Balhazars and they claim this 2009 vintage as “one of the best”. To celebrate the release of the most expensive wine ever to sell in a retail store we found the the rest of the world’s most expensive wines:

Romanée Conti 1945: $123,900

Romanée Conti  was produced during WWII and only 600 bottles were created. This is an incredibly rare wine. The last bottle sold went to a Y.S. collector who paid $123,900 for a bottle of the stuff. It sold in record-breaking time at Christie’s fine-wine auction.

 

1787 Chateau Lafite: $160,000

Malcolm Forbes purchased this bottle of wine in 1985. It is said that the bottle is part of Thomas Jefferson’s collection and features his initials on the bottle. Forbes paid $160,000 for the bottle which now equates to $315,000. The wine is no longer drinkable but is quite the collector’s item  to have on display.

 

1869 Château Lafite: $233,972

In 2010 an anonymous Asian bidder purchased this bottle of wine for $233,972. Prices for this wine are outrageous in Asia where the wine is considered an extreme luxury purchase and is often gifted to dignitaries and businessmen or given as a wedding present.
1947 Château Cheval Blanc: $304,375

Known as one of the greatest Bordeaux of all time, this bottle was previously owned by a Swiss collector and sold at auction at Christie’s in Geneva. This bottle can still be enjoyed today and kept closed for another 50 years without spoiling.

In 1997 a ship driver discovered this long lost bottle of wine. The bottle was lost in a shipwreck during delivery to the Russian Imperial family in 1916. Each bottle was sold at auction for $275,000.
