Wladimir Klitschko is a Ukrainian heavyweight professional boxer with an estimated net worth of $30 million. Klitschko is the heavyweight champion of the WBA, IBF, WBO, IBO and The Ring. He is 6’6″ and weighs 243 pounds. Volodymyr Voldymyrovych Klychko was born on March 25, 1975 in Semipalatinsk, Soviet Union (now Kazakhstan). Klitschko’s father was a two-star Soviet general who was one of the commanders in charge of leading the cleanup of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant after its meltdown in 1986. Afterward, his father was diagnosed with cancer. Klitschko’s older brother, Vitali, would also go on to become a heavyweight boxing champion. The Klitschko brothers trained to be boxers in Poland since the early 1990s and had immediate success as Wladimir won the Junior European and World Championships before entering the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and taking home the gold medal.
Only months after winning the gold medal, Klitschko would turn professional as he fought and won his first bout November 1996. He would go on to win the next 23 fights before suffering his first loss to America Ross Puritty in 1998. Klitschko would rebound and go on to win his first heavyweight title in 2000 and since then has put together one of the most storied boxing careers in history. He is the reigning IBO, IBF, WBO and The Ring Heavyweight Champion, the second longest reigning champion in that division of all time. He has had the third most title defenses (15) and is rated among the best pound-for-pound boxers in the world. As of late in 2013, he had amassed a record of 61-3.
Klitschko is among the biggest sports celebrities in the world and has a truly iconic status in his homeland, his adopted homeland (Germany) and Europe in general. He speaks four languages and was awarded a PhD in Sports Science from Kiev University in 2001. His nickname was previously “The Steel Hammer” but has been adjusted to “Dr. Steel Hammer,” a play on his degree and his brother’s nickname, “Dr. Ironfist.” Klitschko appeared in the film Ocean’s Eleven (2001) and once auctioned off his 1996 gold medal for $1 million to help a charity which supported Ukrainian children. The gold medal was immediately returned to him but the donation was still given. Klitschko has dated a number of celebrities but since 2009 has been dating actress Hayden Panettiere. Although the two parted ways briefly in 2011, they rekindled the romance and have since then become engaged.
