Larry Bird was born in West Baden Springs, Indiana on December 7, 1956. He grew up in the nearby town of French Lick. Bird attended Springs Valley High School where he was a star basketball player. By the time that he graduated in 1974, Larry had become the school’s all-time leading scorer.

Larry Bird’s impressive high school stats had colleges lining up to recruit him. He accepted an athletic scholarship from the University of Indiana. Once on campus, Bird was not a fan of the school’s large campus. The next year he transferred to Indiana State. Bird led Indiana State to the NCAA championship during his last year. They played against Michigan State, which was led by Magic Johnson. Bird’s team lost, but that year he won the USBWA College Player of the year Award along with plenty more accolades. He ended his three-year college career as the fifth-highest scorer in NCAA history.

In 1978 the Boston Celtics drafted Bird as their first overall pick, offering him a then-record of $650k/year. Bird finished his last year at Indiana State and joined the Celtics in 1979. During his rookie year Bird averaged 21.3 points per game, justifying his salary. He earned the NBA Rookie of the Year award for his outstanding skills on the court. Larry Bird earned his first NBA Championship playing with the Celtics in 1981.

During Larry Bird’s 13 years playing in the NBA he has won three NBA Championships. He is a nine-time member of the NBA First Team and two-time NBA Finals MVP. After retiring from playing the game, Bird became the head coach of the Indiana Pacers in 1997. In the 1997-98 season he was voted the NBA Coach of the Year for revitalizing the Pacers’ stats. He stepped down as coach in 2000 to become the Pacers’ President of Basketball Operations. In the 2011-12 season Bird was named NBA Executive of the Year. He’s the only person in history to be named an NBA MVP, Coach of the Year, and Executive of the Year. ESPN has ranked Larry Bird 30th on its list of “Top 50 Athletes of the 20th Century”.
