Clay Matthews has an estimated net worth of $8.5 million

Clay Matthews III is an American professional football player with an estimated net worth of $8.5 million. He is currently a linebacker for the Green Bay Packers of the National Football League. Matthews is 6’3″ and weighs 255 pounds. William Clay Matthews III was born on May 14, 1986 in Northridge, California. Matthews comes from an incredible NFL lineage, including his father, William Clay Matthews II, who played 19 seasons in the league, his uncle, Bruce, who also played 19 seasons and is in the Hall-of-Fame, and his grandfather, William Clay Matthews, who played 4 seasons. His brother, Casey, plays professionally for the Philadelphia Eagles. Matthews played high school football but was not a standout, largely because he was undersized.

Despite his lineage, he did not garner any attention from college football teams and had to walk-on to USC’s football program in 2004. Although USC won the national championship in 2004, Matthews only played on the scout team. Throughout his time in college, Matthews steadily improved and worked on getting his body stronger, ultimately becoming a valuable member of the team. In his senior year, the team used Matthews in a hybrid, “Elephant” position – as a standing defensive end – and the experiment worked out well for the player and team. Before and after he graduated (during the NFL combine), Matthews began to attract attention from professional teams. He was eventually selected with the 26th pick in the first round by the Green Bay Packers on the 2009 NFL Draft.

Matthews is one of the few professional football players that enjoyed his most success starting in the NFL. He was an immediate success earning the Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Week honors and becoming a terror for any offenses the Packers faced. His combination of speed, power, skill and knowledge of the game finally came together at the highest level of the game. In his second season, he only got better as he was named the 2010 NFC Defensive Player of the Year and led the Packers to a Super Bowl win. After the 2012 season, Matthews signed the biggest linebacker contract in NFL history, 5-years and $66 million. His good looks and long blond locks make Matthews a natural target for brand endorsement and he is increasingly used to peddle products.
