Butler was raised by his mother with a strict Roman Catholic upbringing. As a young boy he was interested in the arts and joined the Scottish Youth Theatre. His first role was as a a street urchin in the production of Oliver!. Although he loved the arts, Gerard didn’t feel that a career as an actor was a real career. After college, Butler took a year off to travel the world. He ended up in Venice, California where he let lose and enjoyed life as a young man. He returned to Scotland and began his two-year trainee program at one of Edinburgh’s top law firms. While working as a trainee, he realized how much he hated the profession, and he fell into a depression which eventually affected his work. While attending the Edinburgh Film Festival, Butler fell in love with acting all over again, and realized that was what he need to be doing. A week before he was to finish the trainee program, he got fired.
Butler soon made the move to London, England to pursue acting professionally. He worked odd jobs to support himself while following his dream. While working as a casting assistant for the play Coriolanus, Butler begged the director to allow him to audition for the lead role when he bumped into him at a coffee shop. Needless to say, he did an amazing job and got the part. Afterwards, Butler landed the lead role in Trainspotting, the stage rendition of the movie he saw at the Edinburgh Film Festival that inspired him to go back to acting.
Gerard Butler transitioned to film and landed roles in films that that weren’t any commercial successes. It wasn’t until he played King Leonidas in 300, that Butler became a distinguished actor in Hollywood. Since the, the actor has starred in romantic comedies like P.S. I Love You alongside Hilary Swank and The Ugly Truth opposite Katherine Heigl. When reflecting on his life Gerard says, ” I wasn’t going to be an actor.I was going to be a lawyer…There was something else at work, something I didn’t have control of. If I hadn’t [messed] up that job, I wouldn’t be sitting here right now. I might be very mediocre lawyer in some small town in the middle of Scotland.”
