In the 1980s Parton became mainstream when she transitioned to acting. She starred in the comedy film 9 to 5 in 1980. She contributed to the film’s soundtrack and the title track also became a number one hit and earned the country singer a Academy Award nomination. Two years later she starred in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. The next year she made the smash hit “Islands in the Stream” with Kenny Rogers. In 1986, Dolly did something ambitious, and opened up an amusement park called Dollywood, in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. The amusement park is still a popular tourist attraction.
