Stephen Colbert is an American television host and political satirist with an estimated net worth of $45 million. He is the host of Comedy Central’s satirical news show, The Colbert Report. Colbert is 5’10″ and 180 pounds. Stephen Tyrone Colbert was born on May 13, 1964 in Washington, D.C. Colbert was one of 11 children born to his father, James William Colbert, Jr., who was a doctor and dean of the medical school at Yale and later vice president for student affairs Medical University of South Carolina, and his mother, a homemaker. He spent most of his formative years in South Carolina but his father and two of his brothers were killed in a plane accident in 1974.
In prep school, Colbert acted in many plays and wrote for the school newspaper, while also playing in an cover band. He enrolled in a Virginia college but transferred to Northwestern University to pursue a theater major. After school, he joined the famed Second City improvisational group in 1986 and soon was selected as Steve Carell’s understudy for the touring company. He worked with Amy Sedaris and Paul Dinello and eventually moved to New York when they were given the chance to do a sketch comedy series, Exit 57, for Comedy Central in 1995. The show was short lived but received good feedback. He would go on to work on the Dana Carvey Show, alongside such future heavyweights as Louis C.K., Robert Smigel and Charlie Kaufman. At around this time he took a job as a humorous correspondent for Good Morning America, which only aired one of his segments. It did, however, catch the attention of The Daily Show’s producer, who hired Colbert in 1997.
Colbert was one of four correspondents who had segments on The Daily Show, which was then hosted by Craig Kilborn. When Kilborn left in 1999, Jon Stewart took over and Colbert’s role increased. His fame increased along with the popularity of the show and he won three Emmy’s for his writing. In 2005, Comedy Central decided to spin off Colbert’s character into his own show, The Colbert Report.
