The son of a military man, he moved to St. Louis at a young age with his mother when his parents were divorced.  While still in high school, he formed the group, St. Lunatics, who received local acclaim for their song “Gimme What Ya Got.” The band never signed a record deal and Nelly went his own way eventually signing with Universal Music Group.

Nelly’s major label debut would come in 2000 with Country Grammar. The title track was an immediate hit, getting to No. 7 in the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 1 in Hot Rap Tracks. The album  reached  No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and was certified 9x platinum. Nelly was a star and his stature would only increase with his next album, Nellyville, in 2002. It debuted at No. 1 in the Billboard 200 and its lead single, “Hot in Herre” was a number one hit that became an anthem for summer throughout the first decade of the new century. The song won a Grammy Award for Best Male Rap Solo Performance in 2003.  His third album, Da Derrty Versions: The Reinvention, came soon afterward and enjoyed similar success with its single “Iz U.” His subsequent albums over the past decade have enjoyed commercial success, but his popularity never reached its initial heights.

Nelly’s ascension to celebrity was swift and he capitalized in non-musical ventures, including signing a one-year deal with Nike to release Limited Edition sneakers. He would go on to ink a deal with rival shoe company Reebok and  be part of ad campaigns like “Got Milk” and for Ford cars.
