Patrick Riley was born in Rome, New York on March 20, 1945. His father Leon, was a minor league baseball player. Athleticism was in Patrick’s blood. He helped the Lakers win the 1972 NBA championship. Four years later Riley retired from playing basketball.

In 1980, Riley returned to the Los Angeles Lakers, but this time as an assistant coach. Eventually he moved up to head coach and led the team to the 1983,1984, and 1986 NBA Finals. The Lakers won NBA Championships in 1982, 1985, 1987, and 1988 under his direction. Riley’s stellar record made him the second winningest coach in NBA history, after Lenny Wilkens. In 1990, Riley was named NBA Coach of the Year. That same year he stepped down as the Lakers’ coach due to allegations of player mistreatment and anger issues.

After briefly working as a NBC sports commentator, Riley became the head coach of the New York Knicks in 1991. He was honored as NBA Coach of the Year for a second time in 1993. The following year he led the Knicks to the 1994 NBA Finals. In 1995, Riley resigned as head coach of the New York Knicks. He became the head coach and general manager of the Miami Heat. He was recognized again in 1997 with the NBA Coach of the Year award. For a couple of years Riley stepped down as head coach to focus on his responsibilities as the team’s general manager. He resumed his role as head coach in 2005, only to retire from coaching all-together in 2008. Riley still holds the position as the Miami Heat’s president.
