He was recognized again in 1997 with the NBA Coach of the Year award. For a couple of years Riley stepped down as head coach to focus on his responsibilities as the team’s general manager. He resumed his role as head coach in 2005, only to retire from coaching all-together in 2008. Riley still holds the position as the Miami Heat’s president.
