Gina Rinehart is an Australian mining heiress with an estimated net worth of $17 billion. Georgina Hope Rinehart was born on February 9, 1954 in Perth, Western Australia. She is the only child born to Lang Hancock and Margaret Nicholas. She grew up in Nunyerry until she was four years old. She later attended boarding school at St. Hilda’s Anglican School for Girls in Perth. After boarding school Rinehart briefly attended Sydney University where she studied economics. However she dropped out to work with her father. While working with her father Gina learned a lot about the Pilbara iron-ore business.

At the age of nineteen Gina married Greg Milton. He later changed his surname to Hayward. They had two children together, John Langley, and Bianca Hope. After six years of marriage, Gina and Greg separated in 1979 and divorced in 1981. In 1983 she married Frank Rinehart, an German-American attorney. They had two daughters together, Ginia and Hope. Frank Rinehart died in 1990.

When her father Lang Hancock passed away in March 1992, Gina Rinehart became the Executive Chairman of Hancock Prospecting Pty Limited (HPPL)  and the HPPL Group of companies. She solely owns the company and has absolutely no shareholders. The company’s profits from coal and iron production are estimated around $10 billion annually.

In addition to her fortune from mining, Rinehart has bought stake in media conglomerates, Fairfax Media and Ten Network Holdings. She is the largest shareholder for Fairfax Media.

Rinehart and her step-mother, Rose Porteous got into an intense legal battle after her father’s death in regards to control of the Hancock assets. It took 14 years for the negotiations to settle. As of 2013, Rinehart is the fourth richest woman in the world and the wealthiest in Australia.
