After Perry graduated from Texas A&M in 1972, he joined the joined the United States Air Force. He flew a C-130 tactical aircraft for the 772nd Tactical Airlift Squadron until 1977. Perry left the Air Force with the ranking as a captain. He returned to Texas and entered the cotton farming business with his father.
In 1984, Perry was elected into the Texas House of Representatives as a Democrat. In 1989, Rick Perry announced his switch to the Republican party, The following year he ran against the incumbent Democratic agriculture commissioner, Jim Hightower. He won the election and served as the agriculture commissioner until her was elected lieutenant governor of Texas in 1998. When then-governor George W. Bush resigned in 2000 to become the U.S. president, Perry assumed the seat as the Texas state governor.
Rick Perry is the longest-serving Texas governor. He made headlines in July 2013 when he announced he will not be seeking re-election in 2014. He will be leaving the office in 2014, and retiring on January 20, 2015.
