Aretha Franklin has an estimated net worth of $60 million

Aretha Louise Franklin is an American singer and musician with an estimated net worth of $60 million. She is 5’5″ and weighs 200 pounds. Aretha Franklin was born on March 25,1942 in Memphis, Tennessee. Aretha’s father was a respected baptist minister well-known throughout the country. Due her father’s popularity, Aretha was surrounded by local and national celebrities from a young age. Growing up as a minister’s child, Aretha began singing in the church’s choir. She learned how to play the piano by ear. By the age of 14, Franklin traveled with her father’s traveling revival show. During the tours, she got to perform with gospel greats like Mahalia Jackson, Sam Cooke, and Clara Ward. Being on the road at a young age exposed Aretha  to adult behavior, and at the age of fifteen she had her first baby. Two years later she gave birth to her second child. After taking a hiatus to focus on family, Aretha moved to New York with her father’s blessing to pursue music. When she arrived to New York in 1960, Aretha was courted by several different record labels, but she ended up signing a music deal with Columbia Records.

Franklin’s first album The Great Aretha Franklin featured the somewhat successful single, “Rock-A-Bye Your Baby With A Dixie Melody” which reached number 37 on the pop charts. She had a few singles that made it to the top ten on charts but she failed to capture the right audience. Columbia Records didn’t understand the direction that Aretha wanted to go with her music. Her debut album didn’t showcase her potential and talents, so in 1967 Franklin made the shift over to Atlantic Records. At Atlantic, she released her legendary single “Respect”. The track earned her two Grammy Awards. Aretha’s second album also included a string of hits like ”Baby I Love You,” “Think,” “Chain of Fools,” “I Say A Little Prayer,” and “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman.” In 1968, Aretha sang at her father’s friend, Dr. Martin Luther King’s funeral. She sang a heartfelt rendition of “Precious Lord”. In 1972 she sang at the funeral of gospel great, Mahalia Jackson. Moved by the death of the iconic gospel singer, Franklin released her album Amazing Grace in 1972. The album sold over 2 million units, making it the best-selling gospel album of all time.

Franklin continued to enjoy success throughout the 70s and was given the title as the “Queen of Soul”. Over the years the queen learned to reinvent herself and make relevant music that audiences enjoyed. In 1987 Franklin became the first woman to ever be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 1993, Aretha was invited to sing at the inauguration of former U.S. president Bill Clinton. At the 1994 Grammy Awards, Franklin was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award.
