Chaka Khan is an American singer-songwriter with an estimated net worth of $30 million. She is 5’4″ and weighs 195 pounds. Chaka Khan was born Yvette Stevens on March 23, 1953 in Chicago, Illinois. As a child, her musical influences were Billie Holiday and Gladys Knight. When Khan was 11, she banded with her sister and formed a  musical group called the Crystalettes. The Crystalettes became involved with the Affro-Arts Theater and started another musical group called The Shades of Black. In 1969, Khan joined the Black Panther Party. She worked in a sector of the organization that provided free breakfast to children. She also adopted a new name at this time: Chaka Adunne Aduffe Yemoja Hodarhi Karifi. Enthralled in the black empowerment movement, Khan dropped out of formal high school. In the early 1970s Khan joined a musical group called Rufus. Rufus’ debut self-titled album was released in 1973. Moderately successful hits like “Whoever’s Thrilling You” and “Feel Good” gave the world a taste of Khan’s powerful vocals. The group released their sophomore album Rags to Rufus the following year. Rags to Rufus  was a commercial success. Stevie Wonder wrote their single “Tell Me Something Good” which sold over a million copies alone. The success of “Tell Me Something Good” earned the group a Grammy Award for “Best R&B Vocal Performance by a Duo, Group or Chorus” in 1974. In 1975 Khan penned the group’s next big hit “Sweet Thing”. The group continued to have success with songs like “Ain’t Nobody” and “Do You Love What You Feel”. The group’s name also when through a couple of changes. The name went from Rufus to Rufus featuring Chaka Khan, and then Rufus & Chaka.

Chaka Khan continued to record with Rufus up until the early 1980s. At the same time she worked on her solo career. In 1978, she released her debut solo album Chaka. The album featured the smash single “I’m Every Woman” which earned her two Grammy Awards as a solo artist. In 1984, Chaka won a Grammy for her song “I Feel for You” which featured hip-hop artist Melle Mel. The infectious track infused electric dance music, R&B, and rap; it took the world by storm. Other hits from her second solo album were “Through the Fire” and “This is My Night”. Khan added another Grammy to her award case when she collaborated with Ray Charles in 1990 for the track “I’ll Be Good to You” and another in 1992 for “The Woman I Am”.

In the early 1990s, Khan moved to London to raise her children. In 2002, Khan took home her eighth Grammy Award for her cover of Marvin Gaye’s song “What’s Going On” with the Funk Brothers. She joined the London Symphony Orchestra and created an album entitled ClassiKhan in 2004. Khan also founded the Chaka Khan Foundation which provides education programs to economically disadvantaged families and autistic children.
