Sylvia Browne was an American author and self-described psychic and spiritual medium with an estimated net worth of $70 million. She was 5’8″ and weighed 187 pounds. Sylvia Celeste Shoemaker was born on October 19, 1936 in Kansas City, Missouri. Browne claimed that she began having psychic abilities by the early age of three. Her grandmother, who claimed to be a psychic medium, helped her understand her gift and guided the young child to use her gifts properly. Browne started helping out friends and family by using her gift to see into the future. She became well-known locally for her self-proclaimed gifts.
In 1964 Sylvia Browne moved to California where she continued to give private psychic readings. In 1974 she founded The Nirvana Foundation for Psychic Research (also known as Sylvia Browne Corporation). She began performing thousands of one-on-one psychic readings for groups and individuals. By 2008, Browne was charging $850 for a 20 to 30 minute telephone session. By 2010 she owned the Sylvia Browne Corporation and Sylvia Browne Enterprises.
Browne’s businesses were booming and bringing in millions per year. It also didn’t hurt that she became a regular guest on television shows such as The Montel Williams Show, Larry King Live, and That’s Incredible!. She also frequented U.S. radio shows and hosted her own 60-minute internet radio show on Hay House radio. Browne discussed paranormal issues and performed psychic readings on her radio show.
Although she received lots of publicity, Sylvia Browne was widely criticized for her claim of having psychic abilities. Many of her psychic predictions were proven completely false. Two of the most high-profiles cases where Browne’s predictions were wrong were the cases of Amanda Berry and Shawn Hornbeck.
In 2003 Sylvia Browne predicted she would die at the age of 88 on Larry King Live. Browne died on November 20, 2013 at a hospital in San Jose, California. She was 77 years old.
