Carol Burnett was born on April 26, 1933 in San Antonio, Texas. After Burnett’s parents divorced in the late 1930s, she went to live with her grandmother in Hollywood, California. She graduated from Hollywood High School in 1951. Burnett aspired to become a playwright so she studied theatre and English at the University of California, Los Angeles. She dropped out of college early to move with her boyfriend to New York City in order to break into the acting business.

In October 2013 Carol Burnett won the comedy industry’s highest honor. She was presented with the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor at the Kennedy Center Honors. Unfortunately in 2002, Carol’s daughter Carrie passed away from cancer. Burnett established the Carrie Hamilton Theatre in honor of her daughter. In 2013, Carol Burnett published Carrie and Me: A Mother-Daughter Love Story, a memoir detailing Carrie’s life.
