Mario Andretti and his twin brother Aldo were born on February 28, 1940 in Istria (was part of Italy but is now Motovun, Croatia). In 1948 the Andretti family moved to a refugee camp in Lucca, Italy after the Istrian exodus. They then immigrated to the United States in 1955, settling in Nazareth, Pennsylvania.

Andretti has won races in Formula One, IndyCar, World Sportscar Championship, and NASCAR. He has also won races driving midget and sprint cars.
Mario Andretti is the only driver to date to ever win the Indianapolis 500, Daytona 500, and Formula One World Championship. Along with Juan Pablo Montoya, Andretti is the only driver to win the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, Formula One, and Indianapolis 500. Since Andretti won the 1978 Dutch Grand Prix, no American has won a Formula One race since.
