George Dario Marino Franchitti was born on May 19, 1973 in Bathgate, Scotland.  While Franchitti’s parents were both born in Scotland, his heritage is mostly Italian. After living in Bathgate, his family moved to Whitburn when he was 8 and he would go on to attend the exclusive Stewart’s Melville College in Edinburgh where he would take in interest in karting. He built up his early resume winning the Karting Scottish Junior Championship in 1984 at 11 years old, progressing to the British Junior Championships in 1985 and 1986, followed by the Scottish Senior Championship in 1988.

In 1991, Franchitti won the Formula Vauxhall Junior championships in 1991 and joined Paul Stewart Racing  in Formula Vauxhall Lotus, where he would win the championship in 1993. He would continue to move series and teams including participating in the International Touring Car Championships in mid to late 1990s, until settling in CART racing in the United States. After joining the Andretti Green Team, he moved with the team to the IndyCar Series in 2003 and would win two races in the division in 2004 and 2005.

Franchitti’s star would begin to rise internationally in 2007 when he won the IRL Championship for the first time with four wins, although he suffered two big crashes during the year. That year he also won his first Indianapolis 500 and was named BBC Scotland’s Sports Personality of the Year. After a brief try at NASCAR un 2008, Franchitti was back at IndyCar in 2009 and would win the championship for three consecutive years (2009-2011). He would also go on to win two more Indianapolis 500s (2010 and 2012). After a terrible crash in 2013 – in which he suffered multiple spinal fracture, right ankle fracture and a concussion – Franchitti decided to retire from racing. Franchitti’s rise to worldwide fame was boosted significantly in 2001 when he married internationally recognized actress Ashley Judd. The two were married for more than a decade but divorced in 2013.
