Mos Def is an American actor and rapper with an estimated net worth of $5 million. He is 5’9 1/2″ and weighs 167 pounds. Dante Terrell Smith was born on December 11, 1973 in Brooklyn, New York. His father was was a member of the Nation of Islam and later joined the community of Imam Warith Deen Mohammed. Dante Smith took his shahada at the of 19, which declared his Muslim faith.

In 1996 he adopted the stage name Mos Def and emerged as a solo hip-hop artist, working with De La Soul and Da Bush Babees. His first single released was “Universal Magnetic”. He signed to Rawkus Records  and joined forces with Talib Kweli to form the rap duo, Black Star. In 1998 Black Star dropped the album Mos Def & Talib Kweli are Black Star. The album contained hit singles like “Respiration” and “Definition”. Both songs ended up becoming featured on VH1′s 100 Greatest Songs of Hip-Hop.

In 1999 Mos Def dropped his first solo album entitled Black on Both Sides. After Rawkus Records fell apart, the rapper singed a music deal with Interscope/Geffen Records. He went on to drop three more solo albums: The New Danger (2004), True Magic (2006), The Ecstatic (2009).

Although Mos Def is an accomplished hip-hop artist who has garnered six Grammy nominations to date, he is also recognized for his performances in television and film. He has earned critical acclaim for his performances in films like Something the Lord Made, Next Day Air, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Be Kind Rewind, The Italian Job, and his portrayal of Brother Sam on the Showtime drama series Dexter.
