He is the second of three children born to Ethyl and Shirley Povich. Povich grew up in a Jewish-American family. His father was a sportswriter for the Washington Post and his mother was a homemaker. When Povich graduated from the Landon School in 1957 he matriculated to the University of Pennsylvania. Povich graduated with a degree in broadcast journalism in 1962.
Right after graduation Povich landed a job at WWDC, a Washington, DC radio station. He worked as a reporter and did publicity for the station. In 1966 he became a reporter for D.C. television station WTTG. The following year he became the co-host of WTTG’s daytime talk show Panorama. The exposure from Panorama led to Povich getting news anchor jobs at stations in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Philadelphia. In 1986, Povich landed a a job as a host of the television show Current Affairs. The program was popular and Povich stayed with the show until 1990.
In September 1991 The Maury Povich Show was launched. His show was nationally syndicated and distributed by Paramount Television though a partnership with Povich’s production company, MoPo Productions. In 1998 the show was renamed Maury after GE overtook production of the show. The show has veered into the realm of tabloid television. Maury’s show often features women seeking paternity tests to prove the legitimacy of parenthood to fathers in question.
Maury Povich has been married to new anchor Connie Chung since 1984. They have two daughters, Susan and Amy Povich. In 1995 the couple adopted a son, Matthew Jay Povich.
