Larry King has an estimated net worth of $150 million
Larry King is an American television and radio host with an estimated net worth of $150 million. Lawrence Harvey Zeiger was born in Brooklyn, New York on November 19, 1933. His parents were Jewish immigrants. His father, Edward Zeiger, was a bar owner. His mother, Jennie Gitlitz was a garment worker. Tragedy struck the family when Edward died from heart disease when Larry was only nine years old. Jennie had to to go welfare to support her family. Larry had dreams of becoming a radio personality from a young age, but he was impacted heavily from the death of his father. He lost interest in school and barely graduated high school. After high school Larry worked at the post office to help support his mother.
Larry learned that there was a growing media market in Florida and stations were hiring inexperienced broadcasters. He moved to Miami and worked at WAHR doing odd jobs and cleaning up the building. In 1957, Larry got a chance of a lifetime when a radio announcer quit. He was immediately hired to take over the morning broadcasts. He also did the afternoon sportscasts and newscasts for the station. The station manager advised Larry that his last name Zeiger was too ethnic and hard to remember. Larry decided to professionally go by Larry King after hearing an advertisement for King’s Wholesale Liquor.
During the 1960s King gained major popularity in the South Florida market. He had a radio show, a Miami television program, and contributed to the Miami Herald. In 1971, King fell from grace when he was convicted of grand larceny and lost his jobs. He was severely in debt and his public image was ruined. He worked for years to rebuild his career on the West Coast. By the 1970s the larceny case had blown over and King returned to Miami to host the evening nationally syndicated radio program, The Larry King Show.
King’s radio show caught the attention of media mogul, Ted Turner. Turner hired King to host his own talk show on the then-suffering CNN channel. Larry King Live debuted in 1985 and remained on-air for 25 years. Larry King Live was CNN’s longest running program reaching over one million viewers a night.
