A few of her hit songs are “I Believe,” “Bittersweet,” and “When I See You.” She is 5’7″ and weighs 145 pounds. Fantasia Monique Barrino was born on November 30, 1984 in High Point, North Carolina. Barrino comes from a musical family which travelled around performing in the Carolinas when she was young and once recorded an album, Miracles. Barrino dropped out of high school after he was the victim of a rape. She became pregnant by her boyfriend when she was 16 in 2001 and gave birth to a daughter.

Barrino moved to Greensboro, North Carolina, before auditioning for American Idol in Atlanta in 2004. Her performance of “Summertime” during the Idol auditions was called the best performance in the show’s history by judge Randy Jackson and was named as one of the best television moments of the year by AOL. She would go on to get even more praise from Simon Cowell, who qualified her as the best contestant in the history the program across its numerous countries and among its over 70 winners. At the time she won the competition, Barrino was its youngest ever winner at 19, although that record would be rewritten by 17-year-old Jordin Sparks in later seasons.

After winning Idol, Barrino signed with J Records and released her debut single, “I Believe” which would reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 list, making her the first musician in history to have their first song reach the top spot. The song spent 11 weeks at number one, the longest ever stay at the top for an Idol contestant, and would become the top selling single of 2004. Her first album, Free Yourself, reached No. 8 on the Billboard 200 in its first week and would eventually sell two million units. She would go on to land television appearances in 2005 – playing Aretha Franklin in American Dreams  and voicing a Simpsons’ character – as well as be a guest on numerous late night talk shows. She released a book, Life is Not a Fairy Tale, soon after and starred as herself in the Lifetime Movie in 2006. She would go on to receive two Grammy nominations for her second album and eventually won her first Grammy for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for “Bittersweet” in 2011. She continues to record albums and act on television and in musicals. She gave birth to her second child in 2011.
