Amancio Ortega Gaona has an estimated net worth of $57 billion
Amancio Ortega Gaona is a Spanish fashion executive and entrepreneur with an estimated net worth of $57 billion. Amancio Ortega Gaona was born on March 28, 1936 in Busdongo de Arbás, León, Spain. He spent most of childhood living in León until his family moved to A Coruña when he was 14 due to his father’s job as a railway worker. As soon as he moved to A Coruña he got a job as a shop assistant for a local shirt maker called Gala. The shop still sits in downtown A Coruña. In 1972 Gaona founded Confecciones Goa, a company which produced quilted bathrobes.
Three years later, Gaona opened his first Zara store. During the eighties he opened many big Zara stores throughout Galicia. Zara is now part of the Inditex Group in which Gaono owns 59.29%. Inditex owns over 6,000 stores and brands including Massimo Dutti, Zara Home, Zara, Stradivarius, Pull and Bear, Bershka and employs over 92,000 employees.
Although he is the third richest person in the world, Gaona maintains a very low profile. Up until 1999, no photographs had ever been published of the fashion mogul. He only revealed himself in 2000 during a public appearance gearing up for his company’s initial public offering on the stock market.
He remains very humble and it is reported that he goes to the same coffee shop everyday and eats lunch with his employees in the cafeteria. He refuses to wear a tie and instead opts for a simple blue blazer, white shirt, and grey pants; none of which are Zara. Gaono is also said to take a very-hands-on approach to the production and design elements of the company.
Amancio Ortega Gaona lives in an apartment building in Galicia, Spain with his second wife.
