Michelle Wingshan Kwan was born on July 7, 1980 in Torrance, California to Danny and Estella Kwan, two immigrants from Hong Kong, China. Kwan’s interest in figure skating began at the age of five, when she accompanied her older brother (hockey player Ron Kwan) and older sister (ice skater Karen Kwan) to the ice rink. By the time Kwan was eight, she and her sister were training seriously with a coach. They trained about 3-4 hours per day. They typically woke up at 4:30 am to go skate at the rink before school; after school they immediately went to the rink for more training.
All those hours with the skating coach proved to be a financial strain on the Kwan family. When she was 10 years old they could no longer afford a coach. The Los Angeles Figure Skating Club offered the family financial assistance which allowed Kwan to continue figure skating.
All of their early efforts paid off because she became America’s most popular and decorate figure skater.
