Dikembe Mutombo is a Congolese American professional basketball player with an estimated net worth of $75 million. He is 7’2″ and weighs 260 pounds. Dikembe Mutombo Mpolondo Mukamba Jean-Jacques Wamutombo was born on June 25, 1966 in Kinhasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo. Mutombo came to America on a USAID scholarship to study at Georgetown University. Mutombo originally intended on becoming a doctor but his large stature stood out to the Hoyas’ basketball coach, John Thompson. Thompson recruited Mutombo to the university’s basketball team. He spoke almost no English and had to study in the ESL program, but Mutombo excelled on the court. He became an excellent shot blocker for the team, setting a team record of 12 shot blocked in a game. He graduated in 1991 with a bachelor’s degree in linguistics and diplomacy.
Dikembe Mutombo was selected as the Denver Nuggets’ fourth overall pick in the 1991 NBA Draft. As a rookie he immediately became valuable to the team and was selected for the All-Star team. Within his first two seasons of playing professional basketball, Mutombo won the “NBA Defensive Player of the Year” Award. He has gone on to win that same award three more times. Mutumbo is considered one of the best shot blockers and defensive players in NBA history.
During his 18 seasons in the NBA, Mutombo has played for the Denver Nuggets (1991-96), Atlanta Hawks (1996-2001), Philadelphia 76ers (2001-02), New Jersey Nets (2002-03), New York Knicks (2003-04), and Houston Rockets (2004-2009). He is a 8-time NBA All-Star, 2-time J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award recipient, 2-time NBA Rebounding Champion, 3-time NBA Blacks Leader, and 3-time member of the NBA All-Defensive First Team. Dikembe Mutombo is the league’s second best shot blocker, after only Hakeem Olajuwon.
Dikembe Mutombo suffered from a knee injury in the first round of the 2009 NBA Playoffs. Soon after the injury he announced his retirement from the game.
Dikembe Mutombo is well-known for his humanitarian efforts. He founded the Dikembe Mutombo Foundation to help better the living conditions of his native land, Democratic Republic of the Congo. He is an avid supporter of the Special Olympics. Due to his charity work, President George W. Bush invited him to the 2007 State of the Union Address and referred to him as the “son of the Congo”. Mutombo was elated about the Bush’s remarks saying, ”My heart was full of joy. I didn’t know the President was going to say such great remarks.”
