After college, Amos spent most of the mid to late 1960s playing professional and semi-pro football with teams such as the Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs, Norfolk Neptunes, Jersey City Jets, and other organizations. From 1970 to 1973 Amos played the character of Gordy Howard on The Mary Tyler Moore Show. In 1974 he go cast to play his most notable character to date, James Evans, Sr. on the sitcom Good Times.
Amos stayed on Good Times until he was fired from the show in 1976 due to arguments with the writers of the show and Norman Lear. Amos did not like the direction the show was going and made sure his opinion was heard. His character got killed in a car accident in the first episode of the fourth season. The show continued for three more seasons without Amos.
Since Good Times, John Amos has had roles in television shows such as Two and a Half Men, Touched by an Angel, Psych, My Name IS Earl, Murder, She Wrote, The West Wing, and All About the Andersons.
He has also had roles in films such as Coming to America, Die Hard 2, Let’s Do It Again, The Players Club, Madea’s Witness Protection, and other films.
