Andre Louis Hicks, better known by his stage name Mac Dre, was an American hip-hop artist who had an estimated net worth of $1.5 million. Andre Louis Hicks was born on July 5, 1970 in Oakland, California. He was raised in Vallejo, California where he attended Hogan High School. He started rapping in high school under the name MC Dre but thought it sounded to East Coast-ish so he changed his handle to Mac Dre.
Mac Dre recorded his first three EPs, Young Black Brotha (1989), California Livin (1991), and What’s Really Going On? (1992) before his imprisonment.
In 1992 Mac Dre was convicted of conspiracy to commit robbery and was sentenced to five years in prison; he refused a deal with the police in which he would name his partners. He was released from prison in 1997.
During the time that he was locked up he learned to record albums over the phone. Mac Dre recorded the EP Back N Da Hood (1992) and Young Black Brotha: The Album (1993) while incarcerated. Mac Dre has gone on to release a great number of EPs and albums.
In 1996 he founded Thizz Entertainment, an independent record label. Thizz Entertainment is recognized for producing “Thizz music” and popularizing the Bay Area hyphy movement.
On October 31, 2004 Mac Dre traveled to Kansas City to perform. Allegedly there was a payment dispute between Mac Dre’s camp and the club’s promoter. Mac Dre left the show and went back to his hotel room. In the early morning hours of November 1, 2004 an unidentified assailant in a black Infiniti G36 began shooting at a vehicle in which Mac Dre was a passenger. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The case remains unsolved.
