James Todd Smith AKA LL Cool J was born on January 14, 1968 in Long Island, New York. After adopting his stage name which stands for “Ladies Love Cool James”, a sixteen year old LL signed with Def Jam records in 1984 and released his successful debut album Radio, which garnered two hit singles “Rock the Bells” and “I Can’t Live Without My Radio.” His second album Bigger and Deffer followed in 1987 and earned the rapper another hit song with the ballad “I Need Love.”
