Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani is a member of the Qatari royal family with an estimated net worth of $2.4 billion. He was born on January 1, 1952 in Doha, Qatar. Soon after his birth, Sheikh Hamad’s mother, Sheikha Al-Atiyyah passed away. He was subsequently raised by his brother. In 1971, he graduated from the British Royal Military Academy in Sandhurst, England.

After graduation, Sheik Hamad began his military career as a commander of a mobile brigade. During the seventies, he moved up the military ranks until he was appointed the minister of defense in 1977. That same year, Sheikh Hamad was appointed Heir Apparent of Qatar. In the 1980′s he managed the Supreme Planning Council. His main responsibilities were to set in place Qatar’s economic and social policies. He then became involved with the development of Qatar’s oil and natural gas resources. After a government deposition successfully deposed his father in a palace coup, Sheikh Hamad became the Emir of Qatar on June 27,1995.

As Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad had a successful reign. He continued to pursue his developmental plans on Qatar’s natural gas an oil resources. The country produced 77 million tons of natural gas during his reign, making Qatar the richest country in the world. An average Qatari citizen had an income of $86,440 annually during under his leadership.

Sheikh Hamad also improved on the country’s international affairs. He turned the country’s capital of Doha, into a globally recognized city. He improved upon the capital’s infrastructure. Doha also hosted a multitude of events like 2006 Asian Games, 2012 UN Climate Change Conference, and is scheduled to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup.  To ensure steady future income for the State of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad made $100 billion worth of investments globally. Some of the investments include Barclays Bank, Heathrow Airport, Volkswagen, Siemens, Royal Dutch Shell, Harrods, and Paris Saint-Germain F.C. Lastly, The Sheikh maintained a friendly relationship with western countries. His country housed two U.S. military bases and donated $100 million for Hurricane Katrina relief.

Sheikh Hamad has three wives and twenty-four children.He has eleven sons and thirteen daughters. On June 25, 2013 he handed his title as Emir of Qatar down to his son, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.
