Pablo Escobar had an estimated net worth of $25 billion
Pablo Escobar was a Colombian drug lord with an estimated net worth of $25 million. Pablo Escobar was born on December 1, 1949 in Antioquia, Colombia to a peasant and school teacher. Escobar’s life of crime started from a young age. As a school-aged boy he would steal tombstones and sell them to Panamanian smugglers. As a teenager he had aspirations of becoming a millionaire so he stole cars, sold fake lottery tickets, ran street scams, and sold contraband cigarettes. In the early 1970s he got involved with the drug trade. He preferred to trade cocaine and his ruthlessness allowed him to become one of the most violent, wealthy, and powerful drug lords in history.
Escobar’s team included six prominent illegal entrepreneurs from the Medellín area. They purchased large amounts of coca paste from Peru and Bolivia and then processed it and transported it for sale in the United States. The Medellín Cartel became one of the most infamous cartels of all time. They controlled over 80% of all cocaine shipped to the United States.
Fortune and Forbes magazines ranked Escobar as one of the top ten wealthiest people on the globe. His large fortune did not come without a high price. He terrorized any and everyone that got in his way. Escobar is responsible for the deaths of three Colombian presidential candidates, an attorney general, more than 200 judges, countless journalists, an attorney general, and more than 1,000 police officers.
Pablo Escobar invested a lot of his illegally-derived funds into real estate. He also gave to charity and supported soccer clubs. These deeds gained him popularity and a seat in parliament. When the source of his wealth became a topic of discussion, the United States put pressure on Colombia to extradite him.
Escobar started a terror campaign to avoid extradition. The campaign claimed the lives of civil servants, politicians, journalists, and regular citizens. In the end Escobar made many enemies and sought jail as refuge against assassins. On December 2, 1993 Pablo Escobar was shot to death in Medellín, Colombia as he tried to escape from the Colombian National Police.
