Colin Powell is an American Diplomat and retired U.S. Army four-star general with an estimated net worth of $45 million. He is 6’2″ and weighs 217 pounds. Colin Luther Powell was born on April 5, 1937 in Harlem , New York. He is the son of Jamaican immigrants Luther and Maud Powell. Powell was raised in the Bronx and attend New York City public schools. In 1954 he graduated from Morris High School without any plans for the future. He went on to study geology at City College of New York. While in college he joined the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC). He excelled at the program and was soon promoted to the commander of his unit. Powell realized that his experiences with ROTC provided structure and direction to his life. He decided to embark on a military career after his graduation in 1958.

Powell was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army upon graduation. In 1962, President John F. Kennedy sent Powell off to South Vietnam. During his first tour of Vietnam, Powell was awarded a Purple Heart, and a year later, a Bronze Star for his exemplary leadership.  Colin Powell went on his second tour of Vietnam from 1968 to 1969 to investigate the My Lai Massacre. During this tour he was injured in a helicopter crash, but despite his injuries, Colin rescued other soldiers from the burning helicopter. He was awarded the Soldier’s Medal for his courageousness. Throughout Powell’s military career he has received 11 military decorations, included the Legion of Merit.

Powell received his MBA from George Washington University and started a fellowship at the White House in 1972. He worked with Casper Weinberger and Frank Carlucci during the Nixon and Carter administrations-aiding with national security. In 1989, President George H.W. Bush appointed General Colin Powell as Chairman of the Joint Chief of Staffs. This is the highest military position in the Department of Defense. He became the first African-American to get this distinction. He was the chief military strategist during Desert Shield and Desert Storm operations.

In 2000, President George W. Bush appointed Powell to Secretary of State. Powell became the first African-American to hold this position. At the time, this was the highest rank an African-American held in the U.S. government. In 2004, Powell resigned as Secretary of State after acknowledging that it was unlikely that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. Since his retirement, Powell has remained vocal about his political views. He has openly criticized the Bush administration and supported the rights of detainees at Guantanamo Bay. In October 2008, Colin Powell shocked the world when he endorsed then-presidential candidate Barack Obama.
