Colin Powell went on his second tour of Vietnam from 1968 to 1969 to investigate the My Lai Massacre. During this tour he was injured in a helicopter crash, but despite his injuries, Colin rescued other soldiers from the burning helicopter. He was awarded the Soldier’s Medal for his courageousness. Throughout Powell’s military career he has received 11 military decorations, included the Legion of Merit.
Powell received his MBA from George Washington University and started a fellowship at the White House in 1972. He worked with Casper Weinberger and Frank Carlucci during the Nixon and Carter administrations-aiding with national security. In 1989, President George H.W. Bush appointed General Colin Powell as Chairman of the Joint Chief of Staffs. This is the highest military position in the Department of Defense. He became the first African-American to get this distinction. He was the chief military strategist during Desert Shield and Desert Storm operations.
In 2000, President George W. Bush appointed Powell to Secretary of State. Powell became the first African-American to hold this position.
