In 1991, Collins began her professional career as a writer when she took a job writing for children’s television shows on Nickelodeon. Among the shows she worked on were Little Bear, Clarissa Explains it All, Oswald and the Mystery Files of Shelby Woo. Her greatest early success would come as the lead writer on Clifford’s Puppy Days, although she also was nominated for a Writer’s Guild of America nomination for a Christmas special, Santa, Baby! After establishing herself as a television writer, Collins moved on to children’s books and had immediate success with Gregor the Overlander, the first installment of what would be five in the Underland Chronicles and which would land her on The New York Times Best Seller list for the first time.

Her early book writing success would pave the way an even more incredible rise as she wrote The Hunger Games which was released in 2008. A year later, she came out with the second installment in the series, Catching Fire and 11-months after that the third, Mockingjay. In just over a year, 1.5 million copies of the books were printed in North America and The Hunger Games was on The New York Times Best Seller List for more than a year. In 2012, a film version of the book starring Jennifer Lawrence was released and has grossed over $700 million worldwide to date. As expected, the second film of the trilogy was released in 2013 with the third scheduled for 2014.
