Celebrities With Their Own Islands

Sloane | October 9, 2013

John Donne once famously wrote, “no man is an island”. That might be true, but with enough money from film, television, album sales, or ticket sales, some men can actually afford to buy their own island. While mere mortals have to vacation at all-inclusive places like Sandals or Hedonism, the following celebrities can kick their shoes off, dig their toes into the sand, and order another Mai Tai at their own private beach on their own private island. Check out these celebrity island retreats:

The Titanic singer purchased a private island called Ile Gagnon in Quebec for 2001 for her growing family. Her home on the island was built in 2001 and is 24,000 sq. ft. The entire island is a sprawling 830,000 sq. ft. The entire property is fenced in and guarded with its own security team stationed at the entrance.  The island is currently on sale for $29,655,500.

The magician purchased Musha Cay in 2006 for a cool $50 million before turning it into a weekend retreat for the rich and powerful. For $37,000 a night (with a four-night minimum) up to 12 guests can enjoy the 100-acre island complete with “Dave’s Drive-In Theatre”, a pirate themed scavenger hunt, jet skis, banana boats, a Hobie Cat, tennis courts and more.

Richard Branson

Richard Branson’s private retreat, Necker Island, located in the Caribbean has been undergoing renovations for two years. A lighting bolt struck the island and caused a huge fire to engulf the Virgin mogul’s vacation home. As of Oct. 7, 2013, the home is reopened and guests willing to pay the $60,000 nightly rate can enjoy the panoramic views of the crystal blue Caribbean waters.

Mel Gibson

Mel Gibson purchased Mago Island in early 2005 from Japan’s Tokyu Corporation for $15 million. Descendants of the original native inhabitants of Mago, who were displaced in the 1860’s, have protested Gibson’s purchase. An episode of NBC sitcom 30 Rock featured a joke about the island where Jack Donaghy, played by Alec Baldwin, decided to air a pre-recorded telethon to benefit victims of the Mago Island disaster but then discovers the only two victims are Mel Gibson and Jon Gosselin.
