Minaj was born in the capital of Trinidad and Tobago to Carol and Robert Maraj. She is of mixed Afro-Trinidadian and Indian ancestry. She has two siblings, also born in Saint James. She was featured on The Come Up DVD, a popular series of DVD’s featuring underground New York rappers and discovered by Lil Wayne. She was offered guest verses on a variety of albums and personally requested by Jay-Z to sing on Robin Thicke’s single Shakin’ It 4 Daddy.
Her success continued with the release of her first studio album Pink Friday. Minaj became the first female artist to be included on MTV’s annual Hottest MC List. In October 2010, Minaj became the first female solo artists to have seven songs on the Billboard Hot 100 chart simultaneously.
In September 2012 Minaj was confirmed to join the judges panel on the 12th season of American Idol. She has a reported salary of $12 million per season.
