Jill Scott was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on April 4, 1972. She grew up as an only child raised by her mother and grandmother. When Scott was in the eighth grade she discovered the writings of Nikki Giovanni. She fell in love with poetry and looked up to to other writers such as Octavia Butler and J. California Cooper. Scott also developed a passion for music and began singing jazz and soul tunes.

While attending Philadelphia’s Temple University, Scott worked as a poet. She anticipated on becoming a teacher after graduation but life went another way. She dropped out of school to take on a drama apprenticeship. Soon she landed a role in the Canadian touring production of Rent. In 1999, Scott left the traveling show because she could not take the repetitive nature of musical productions.

After leaving the show, Jill Scott focused on beginning her career as a recording artist. She teamed up with the hip-hop group The Roots, and co-wrote the song “You Got Me”. The song went on to win a Grammy award for ‘Best Rap Performance”. Scott then released her first full-length album in Who is Jill Scott?: Words and Sounds, Vol.1 (2000). Her first album featured songs like ”A Long Walk” and “Gettin’ in the Way.” She received massive success from her first album, earning three Grammy nominations. It also made the Top 20 on the Billboard albums chart.

Jill Scott has gone on to release three more studio albums: Beautifully Human: Words and Sounds Vol.2 (2004), The Real Thing: Words and Sounds Vol. 3 (2007), The Light of the Sun (2011). In 2005 Jill Scott won a Grammy award for Best Urban/Alternative R&B Performance for “Cross My Mind”. 2007 was a big year for Scott, along with the release of her third album, she won three Grammy awards.

Jill Scott is also an accomplished actress. She has starred in commercially successful films such as Why Did I Get Married? (2007), Why Did I Get Married Too? (2010), Steel Magnolias (2012), and Baggage Claim (2013).

Jill Scott is currently working on her fifth studio album which will include lullabies. The idea came to her after giving birth to her first son in 2009.
