Barbara Lynn Klein was born on January 28, 1950 in New York, New York to a Jewish family. When she was two years old her family moved to Sacramento, California where she attended Rio Americano High School. At the age of 16, Klein began modeling to get some extra cash in her pockets. While attending UCLA, she took a job to appear on on Playboy’s Playboy After Dark. Her job was to be the beautiful co-host to the show’s director of entertainment, Hugh Hefner.
After co-hosting the show for two days, Hefner asked her on a date. She began a relationship with Hefner who was more than 20 years he senior. The relationship lasted for a couple of years, and Hefner positioned Klein as the main attraction of the Playboy enterprise. He convinced her to change her name from Barbara Klein to Barbi Benton to be more marketable.
Barbi Benton appeared on the cover of Playboy magazine four times: July 1969, March 1970, May 1072, and December 1985. She was never featured as Playmate of the Month although she did many editorials.
In 1969 Benton landed a gig on the television show Hee Haw performing sketch comedy routines. She also made regular guest appearances on The Love Boat and Fantasy Island.
Barbi Benton has also enjoyed a career as a country music singer. She has released four albums: Barbi Doll (1975), Barbi Benton (1975), Something New (1976), Ain’t That Just the Way (1978), and Kinetic Voyage (1988). Her 1975 single “Brass Buckles” peaked at No. 5 on the U.S. country music charts.
