Sir Richard Charles Nicholas Branson is an English business magnate and investor with an estimated net worth of  $4.6 billion dollars. He is known as the founder of Virgin Group and has started over 400 businesses. Sir Richard Branson is six feet tall and weighs 185 pounds.

Branson was born in Blackheath, London on July 18, 1950. He is the only son and eldest child of Edward James Branson, a barrister, and Eve Huntley Branson. Branson was educated at Scaitcliffe School until 13 and then attended Stowe School until 16. His academic performance was poor, and he suffered from dyslexia but realizes he had a strong ability to connect with people from all walks of life.

When he was 16, Branson began his first business venture, a magazine called Student. In 1970 he set up a mail-order record business and then opened a chain of record store, Virgin Records, otherwise known as Virgin Megastores. During the 1980’s Branson set up Virgin Atlantic and expanded the Virgin Records label.

Branson formed Virgin Atlantic Airways in 1984 and launched Virgin mobile in 1999. In 1993 Branson entered the railway business. Virgin Trains won the franchises for the former Intercity West Coast and Cross-Country sectors of British Rail.

On September 25, 2004, Branson announced the formation of his space tourism company, Virgin Galactic. The company will license the technology behind Spaceship One—funded by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen and designed by Burt Ratan. The spaceship will take paying customers into suborbital space for $250,000 a ticket.

Branson has attempted to break multiple world records such as an around the world balloon flight and the fastest crossing of the Atlantic Ocean by boat. He was unsuccessful but remains an avid traveler and adventurer.

Branson is also a humanitarian, citing Nelson Mandela as one of his all-time heroes. He donates a large portion of his earnings to charity. He focuses his humanitarian efforts in South Africa with the Branson School of Entrepreneurship. He has been an outspoken defender of human rights, going on hunger strikes for the Sudanese and joining the movie project Soldiers of Peace, a film against all wars and for global peace.

He owns Necker Island, a 74-acre island in the British Virgin Islands and land in the Caribbean Islands of Antigua and Barbuda.
