Michael Dell has an estimated net worth of $15.9 billion
Michael Dell is an American business magnate, investor, and philanthropist with an estimated net worth of $15.9 billion. Michael Saul Dell was born on February 23, 1965 in Houston, Texas. His father worked as an orthodontist and his mother was a stockbroker. Dell attended Herod Elementary School and was eager to join the business world so he took a high school equivalency test at the age of eight. When he was in his early teens, Dell used his earnings from his part-time job to invest in stocks and precious metals. At the age of 15, he purchased his first computer, an Apple II, from Radio Shack. He quickly disassembled the computer to see how it worked.
During his freshman year as a pre-med student at the University of Texas at Austin, Dell started an informal business of putting together and selling upgrades for personal computers. He applied for a vendor license and won bids because of he did not have the overhead of a computer store. In January 1984 Dell registered his company “PC’s Limited” and operated it out of a condominium. PC’s Limited sold between $50,000 to $80,000 in upgraded personal computers, kits, and add-on components. In May of that year he renamed the company “Dell Computer Corporation”. By 1992, at the age of 27, he was the youngest CEO to have a company listed on Fortune magazine’s list of top 500 companies.
In 1996 Dell began selling computers online, and that year the company launched its first servers. Dell Inc. was soon earning approximately $1 million in sales per day on Dell.com. In 2001 Dell became the world’s largest PC maker, surpassing Compaq. This was the first time the metrics had changed in seven years. While competitors’ sales were shrinking, Dell Inc.’s shipments of servers and computers rose.
Dell Inc has grown to become one of the world’s leading sellers on personal computers. In 2004, Michael Dell stepped down as the company’s CEO, but he remains chairman of Dell Inc’s board.
