Carlos Slim Helú was born on January 28, 1940 in Mexico City, Mexico to Maronite Catholic parents of Lebanese descent. Slim’s father, Julián Slim Haddad owned a dry goods store called La Estrella del Oriente. He also invested in real estate in Mexico City’s commercial district. Those two enterprises brought considerable wealth to Slim’s family.
Slim and his siblings were taught business sense from their father by an early age. By the time he was 12, Slim owned shares in a Mexican bank. At 17, he was earning 200 pesos a week working for his father’s company. Slim serves as the chairman and chief executive of telecommunication companies Telmex and América Móvil. América Móvil was Latin America’s largest mobile phone carrier, and accounted for $49 billion of Slim’s wealth in 2010. Carlos Slim was the wealthiest man in the world from 2010-2013. He is currently the second wealthiest person in the world, after Bill Gates.
Carlos Slim bought New York City’s famed Duke-Semans Mansion for $44 million. The 20,000 sqft. mansion includes a doctor’s office in the basement, a five-story main residence, a penthouse duplex on the top, 12 bedrooms, 14 bathrooms, and 11 wood-burning fireplaces.
