Ananda Krishnan is a Malaysian businessman and philanthropist with an estimated net worth of $11.7 billion. Tatparanandam Ananda Krishnan was born on April 1, 1938 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to Tamil parents of Sri Lankan descent. He attended school at Vivekananda Tamil School in his hometown. He continued his education at Victoria Institution in Kuala Lumpur. Krishnan attended the University of Melbourne, Australia as a Colombo Plan Scholar. He graduated with honors with a B.A. in Political Science. Afterwards Krishnan earned a Masters in Business Administration from Harvard University in 1964.
Ananda Krishnan’s first venture as a entrepreneur was founding the Malaysian consulting firm, MAI Holdings Sdn. Bhd. He created Exoil Trading and bought oil drilling concessions all over the world. In the early 1990s he started to diversify and added multimedia and gambling to his portfolio.
Krishnan currently owns Malaysian satellite television company, Astro. He also owns MEASAT Satellite Systems, oil and gas (Bumi Armada, Pexco), and telecommunications (Maxis, Aircel, Axis, Sri Lanka Telecom). Maxis is Malaysia’s largest mobile phone carrier.
Krishnan has stakes in Tanjong Public Limited Company, a company that mainly operates the Malaysian lottery business but also includes power generation plants, property investment, and liquified petroleum gas distribution.
Ananda Krishnan has two daughters and one son. He is not a fan of public exposure so he remains a very low profile.
