Steven Allan Spielberg was born on December 18, 1946 in Cincinnati, Ohio. His father was an electrical engineer and his mother a concert pianist and restaurateur. Spielberg has been married twice and has seven children. Spielberg spent much of his youth making short films and wrote and directed his first independent film, Firelight, when he was 16. He applied twice to the University of Southern California’s film school, but was denied both times. In the late 1960s, Spielberg became an intern at Universal Studios and shot his first film for theatrical release, Amblin, in 1968. After executives saw the film, Spielberg became the youngest director ever to be signed to a long term deal by a major studio. Initially, he directed episodes of popular television series and in 1971 directed his first television movie, Duel.

Critical acclaim for Duel led to Spielberg’s debut feature film, The Sugarland Express. Although it received some positive reviews it was not a commercial success. Even so, he was offered the chance to direct Jaws. The film was a smashing success earning $470 million worldwide, setting financial records and gaining recognition critically. The success of the film gave Spielberg latitude to pick his next projects and he chose Close Encounters of the Third Kind, another financial success. His next project, Raiders of the Lost Ark, would become one of his most successful and it launched one of motion pictures’ most popular franchises. It was the most successful film of 1981 and a year later Spielberg topped it with E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial. The film became the top-grossing movie in history. Spielberg would go on to produce other successful movies in the 80s, including Poltergeist, The Twilight Zone and the Goonies. In 1985 he also released The Color Purple which was a critical success.

Spielberg’s success would continue throughout the decade and into the 1990s as he directed more Indiana Jones movies, Hook, Jurassic Park, which became the highest grossing film of all time worldwide and Schindler’s List, which won him his Academy Award for Best Director. In 1994, he created DreamWorks Studios with Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Geffen. He continued to produce and direct successful films, including The Lost World: Jurassic Park 2 in 1997 and Saving Private Ryan in 1998. Spielberg continued to be a force in the new century, both in television (HBO’s Band of Brothers) and in film where he has produced and directed films like Minority Report, Catch Me If You Can, Munich, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, War of The Worlds, Lincoln and more.
