Just like Meathead, Reiner is a diehard liberal and continues to be politically active and even founded the American Foundation for Equal Rights, which challenged California Proposition 8 which banned same-sex marriages. Reiner married actress Penny Marshall in 1971 but divorced her a decade later. He later married photographer Michele Singer in 1989 and the couple have three children.
