Singleton made a name for himself initially in music videos, which culminated with his direction of Michael Jackson’s 1991 “Remember the Time” video which, at 9 minutes in length, was almost a short film. The director wasted no time in introducing himself to Hollywood in a big way as his debut film, Boyz n the Hood, in 1991 was a commercial and critical success, earning over $57 million (with a budget of less than $ 7 million) and nominations for Oscars in Best Screenplay and Best Director, the youngest ever to get a nomination and first-ever African-American. Several of the films were in the action-genre, including a remake of Shaft (2000), the sequel to the successful Fast and the Furious, 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003) and Four Brothers in 2005. He also delved into the production side of filmmaking, expanding his skill set. In 1996, Singleton married actress Akosua Gyamama Busia and they have a daughter.
