Karl Anderson, Jr. (known professionally as Michael Kors) is an American fashion designer with an estimated net worth of $1 billion dollars. Kors was born on August 9, 1959 on Long Island, New York. He is the son of Joan Kors, a former models, and Karl Anderson, a college student. When Kors was five his mother married Bill Kors and his surname was changed from Anderson to Kors. His mother told him that he was allowed to pick his own first name as well and he decided on Michael David. Kors had a passion for fashion froma  young age. His mother thought he love of fashion had to do with his exposure to it from such a young age, as she would take him along to her modeling jobs. In his teens, Kors began designing clothes and selling them out of his parents’ basement. His basement design studio was nicknamed the Iron Butterfly. In 1977 he enrolled in the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. He left after only nine months and took a job in a boutique across the street from Bergdorf Goodman. He was given a small space to sell his designs and shortly after, Dawn Mello, fashion director at Bergdorf, discovered Kors. In 1981 Kors launched the Michael Kors womenswear line at Bloomingdales, Lord & Taylor, Neimen Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Bergdorf Goodman. In 1997 Kors was named the first ever women’s ready-to-wear designer and creative director for French fashion house Celine. He turned the fashion house around with successful accessories and a critically acclaimed ready-to-wear line.

In addition to his Michael Kors runway collection, Kors has MICHAEL Michael Kors and KORS Michael Kors lines. Kors has full collection boutiques in New York, Palm Beach, Beverly Hills, Chicago, and Manhasset. Celebrities like Jennifer Lopez, Rachel McAdams, Heidi Klum, and Catherine Zeta-Jones have all worn his pieces. Michael Obama even wore a Michael Kors dress in her first term official portrait.

Kors was a judge on the Emmy-nominated reality television fashion competition Project Runway which aired on Bravo for five seasons and now is in syndication on Lifetime. He left he show on December 18, 2012 and was replaced by fellow designer Zac Posen.

In 2013 Kors was selected for The Time 100, the magazine’s list of the 100 most influential people of the year. He has also won the CFDA Award for womenswear designer of the year in 1999, and the CFDA for menswear designer of the year.
