Bernie Mac was an American stand-up comedian and actor with an estate estimated at $90 million. He is best known for being one of the featured comedians on The Original Kings of Comedy film (2000). He was 6’2″ and weighed 220 pounds. Bernard Jeffrey McCullough was born on October 5, 1957 in Chicago, Illinois and died on August 9, 2008. Mac grew up on Chicago’s South Side and was raised by his mother. He performed his first stand-up routine in front of a church congregation, imitating his grandparents including his grandfather who was a deacon. His mother would die of cancer when Mac was in high school and he lived for a while in Tampa afterward, working at a variety of jobs.

After returning to Chicago, Mac sharpened his funny bones by telling jokes for spare change in the subways of Chicago and eventually joined the comedy club circuit in 1977, including Chicago’s Cotton Club. At 32, he won a comedy competition which would lead to a performance on HBO’s Def Comedy Jam. His onstage presence would translate to film, first in bit parts like 1992’s Mo’ Money, but later in bigger parts including House Party 3 (1994) and Friday (1995). He began attract a larger audience with his stand-up routine and would open for big name musicians and comedians, before getting a starring role in 1998’s The Players Club.

Mac’s stature would skyrocket when as part of The Original Kings of Comedy Tour in the late 1990s and with the release of the similarly titled movie in 2000. Immediately afterward, he legitimized his star power when he became the title star in The Bernie Mac Show, which ran for five seasons and 103 episodes. At the same time as his show was being unveiled to mass audiences, Mac became part of the ensemble cast of Ocean’s Eleven in 2001, which only heightened his worldwide celebrity. He would also be part of the other movies in the Ocean’s franchise. Mac would go on to star in such huge movies as Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle (2003), Mr. 3000 (2004) and his last film appearance in Transformers in 2007. Mac died from complications due to a long-time illness he suffered from in 2008. He was married to Rhonda McCullough in 1977 and he is survived by his wife, daughter and a granddaughter.
