Sugar Ray Leonard has an estimated net worth of $120 million

Sugar Ray Leonard is a retired American professional boxer with an estimated net worth of $120 million. Leonard won the Gold medal in the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games for men’s boxing in the light welterweight division. He is 5’10″and weighs 159 pounds. Ray Charles Leonard was born on May 17, 1956 in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. One of seven children born to a supermarket night manager and a nurse, Leonard and his family moved to Washington, D.C. when he was three and then to Maryland for the rest of his youth.  Leonard first started boxing at around the age of 13 in a recreation center where he followed the steps of his brother.

By 1972, Leonard was boxing in the junior national championships and he tried out for the Olympic Team, despite being underage and lying about his age. In 1973 he won the National Golden Gloves Lightweight Championship and would go on to dominate the junior ranks for several years before making the 1976 Olympic team. He would go on to win the Olympic Gold Medal in 1976, and announced afterward that he would not fight any more but instead enroll in school and go to college. Even so, financial complications and the responsibility of taking care of a young son and aging parents lured Leonard back into the ring. He made his professional fighting debut in 1977 with a resounding win. Two years later he would win his first title, the NABF Welterweight Championship.

Leonard had his first major title fight in 1979 against WBC Welterweight Champion Wilfred Benitez and won by TKO in the 15th round, earning a $1 million purse. The next year he would lose his first pro fight against Roberto Duran but the rematch took place later the same year and Leonard would get his revenge in a fight famous for Duran saying, “No Mas” and quitting in the 8th round. The next year, Leonard would fight Thomas Hearns in a historic slugfest which he won by a TKO in the 14th round. Injuries to his eye would force Leonard to retire in 1982. But he came out of retirement again to participate in what would be known as “The Super Fight” against Marvelous Marvin Hagler in 1987. In one of the most memorable and controversial fights of all time, Leonard defeated Hagler in a split decision. He retired again after the fight but again would come back several more times, even as late as 1996, but never with the same success. He finished his career with 36 wins, 3 losses and 1 draw.

Since his pro career ended, Leonard has been a consistent fixture as a boxing analyst and served as a host and mentor on Sylvester Stallone’s The Contender. He has also acted in several shows like L.A. Heat, Married with Children, and Tales From The Crypt. Leonard is Khloe Kardashian’s godfather and has appeared on Keep Up with the Kardashians. He has been married twice and has four children.
