He was raised in Takoma Park by his mother. When his mother died in 1995, Francis’ grandmother took on parenting her grandson. He stopped playing basketball for the two years following his mother’s death.

Steve Francis attended San Jacinto College of Texas from 1996 to 1997. He transferred to Alleghany College of Maryland, and attended the school from 1997 to 1998. For his junior year, Steve Francis transferred to Maryland to play for the Terrapins. He made a big impact on the team starting as the Terrapins shooting guard. He helped Maryland climb up to the No.5 national ranking at the end of the season. Although he stated he was “99.9%” sure he would return to Maryland for his senior season, Francis declared eligibility for the NBA Draft.

Steve Francis was selected as the Vancouver Grizzlies’ second overall pick. Francis was not excited about the selection, and publicly announced that he did not want to play for the organization. He explained that the distance from Maryland, taxes, endorsements, and God’s will were all reasons why he was not thrilled to join the Grizzlies. Before the 1999-2000 season began he was traded to the Houston Rockets.

Steve Francis shared the Rookie of the Year title with Elton Brand during his first season. He finished up behind Vince Carter at the 2000 Slam Dunk Contest. He played with the Houston rockets from 1999 to 2004, and became a 3-time NBA All-Star during that time frame.

Steve Francis has also played with the Orlando Magic (2004-2006), the New York Knicks (2006-2007), and he returned to the Rockets from 2007 to 2008. He played with the Beijing Ducks of China in 2010 for one season before returning back to the U.S. for retirement.
