Muhammad Ali has an estimated net worth of $80 million

Muhammad Ali is a former American professional boxer with an estimated net worth of $80 million. He is 6’3″ and weighs 236 pounds. Cassius Marcellus Clay, Jr. was born on January 17, 1942 in Louisville, Kentucky. He grew up in a middle-class family where his father worked as a commercial painter and his mother worked as a domestic worker. Although his father was Methodist, Clay and his siblings were raised Baptist by their mother. When Clay was 12 his bicycle got stolen. Joe E. Martin, a police officer and boxing coach found the boy fuming on the side of the road. Clay told Martin that  he was going to “whup” the thief. Martin advised young Clay that he better learn to box first.

As an amateur Clay won six Kentucky Golden Gloves titles and two National Golden Gloves titles. He also won the Amateur Athletic Union National Title and the Light Heavyweight gold medal in the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome. Clay ended his amateur career with 100 wins and 5 loses.

Cassius Clay, Jr. made his professional boxing debut on October 29, 1960 in a match against Tunney Hunsaker. He won after six rounds. Up until 1963 he amassed a record of 19-0 with 15 of his wins by knockout. Clay defeated boxers like Jim Robinson, Henry Cooper, and Doug Jones. He also beat his former trainer Archie Moore in a 1962 match.

By 1963 Clay became the top contender coming for Sonny Liston’s title as the Heavyweight Champ. The fight was set to take place in Miami on February 25, 1964. Clay’s pre-fight antics had the media buzzing and subsequently angering Liston. Before the fight he called Liston “the big ugly bear” adding that “Liston even smells like a bear.” Clay  even said “After I beat him I’m going to donate him to the zoo.”

When asked how he would beat the champ Clay responded with his famous statement, “float like a butterfly and sting like a bee,” summing up that ”Your hands can’t hit what your eyes can’t see.” After six round in the ring, Liston did not answer the bell for the seventh round. Cassius Clay, Jr. was named the winner by TKO. At that time Clay became the youngest boxer to take a reigning heavyweight title at the age of 22.

Shortly after becoming the Heavyweight Champion, Clay joined the Nation of Islam and changed his name to Muhammad Ali. In 1975 he converted to Sunni Islam.

Muhammad Ali went on to defeat more top contenders in heavyweight championship history. He has defeated top heavyweight contenders like Floyd Patterson, Ernie Terrell, Ken Norton, Joe Frazier, George Foreman, and Leon Spinks. He beat European heavyweight champions Karl Mildenberger,  Jürgen Blin, Joe Bugner, Richard Dunn, Jean-Pierre Coopman, Brian London, and Alfredo Evangelista.

Muhammad Ali revolutionized the sport of boxing. At the time most boxers let their managers do the talking for them. Ali thrived off of the spotlight and intimidating his opponents. He never failed to entertain audiences with his outlandish statements and trash talking. He did defeat every single heavyweight champion in his era, so he did back-up his trash talking. Ali isn’t nicknamed “The Greatest” for no reason.
