Mike Tyson has an estimated net worth of $1 million dollars

Mike Tyson is a retired professional American boxer and the former undisputed heavy weight champion of the world with an estimated net worth of $1 million. At one point in his career , Tyson was worth $300 million dollars, but he filed for bankruptcy in February 2003. Tyson is 5’10 and weighs 233 pounds. Michael Gerard Tyson was born on June 30, 1966 in Brooklyn, New York. Tyson’s father was a talented baseball player in North Carolina before he moved to New York and met his mother. Tyson was the last of three children born from the coupling but his father left the family at around the time of his birth. Tyson’s mother was forced to raise the children by herself and they struggled to make ends meet. Bad behavior in school led Tyson to an upstate reform school, where he wound up being introduced to boxing. Soon he caught the attention of legendary boxing manager Cus D’Amato who recognized the inherent talent Tyson had and started to manage his burgeoning career. Tyson’s mother would die when he was 16,  his father in 1992 and his sister in 1990.

His turbulent upbringing imbued in Tyson a fighting spirit and D’Amato used that to the boxer’s advantage as he turned pro at only 18 years old in 1985. His debut was an impressive first round knockout and was  harbinger of things to come as he had 15 bouts in his first year and his first 19 fights all were won via knockout (12 of them in the first round). His impressive start soon would continue but D’Amato died in November of 1985, just at the start of Tyson’s career. Even so, he continued to dominate winning 26 of his first 28 fights by knockout or technical knockout. He would get his first chance at a heavyweight fight in 1986 against Trevor Berbick and he dominated winning by technical knockout in the second round. At 20, he became the youngest heavyweight in history. By 1987 he had unified the boxing titles and had become a true international celebrity. He would continue undefeated until 1990, when he lost in one of the greatest upsets in boxing history to James Douglas. His troubles were just beginning as he was soon arrested for rape in 1991 and would eventually be found guilty and sentenced to six years in prison,  of which he served three years.

His career would never be the same after his conviction and sentence. Although he continued to be a worldwide celebrity and giant in the sports arena, his name would forever carry qualifiers of sexual abuser and out-of-control celebrity. Tyson would go on to fight in 1996 against Evander Holyfield in an attempt to regain the heavyweight championship but lost despite being a heavy favorite. His rematch the next year became one of the biggest sporting events in history for several reasons: it was the most watched pay per view fight of all time to that point, the purse was the highest ever for boxing (Tyson made $30 million to Holyfield’s $35 million) and because of the controversy it berthed – Tyson bit both of Holyfield’s ears and was disqualified. Despite the loss and continuing controversy that followed him, Tyson would continue to fight and make news. He fought Lennox Lewis in another championship bout in 2002 but lost, although it was the highest grossing pay-per-view fight in history. In 2003, soon after another fight, he would declare for bankruptcy. Despite his personal, financial and drug troubles throughout his career, Tyson has persevered and in recent years has made a comeback outside of the ring. He had several cameo appearances in movies, most notably the popular Hangover franchise, released a book and has a one-man traveling show. Tyson was married to actress Robin Givens from 1988 to 1989, a marriage as controversial as it was short as she accused him of spousal abuse on national television.  His second marriage was to Monica Turner from 1997 to 2003, with whom he had two children.  Tyson married a third time, to Lakiha Spicer in 2009. He has had a total of eight children, including a 4-year old daughter who died tragically.
